Cornea
Day of Surgery

You will be asked to eat or drink nothing after midnight except your
usual medications with just a sip of water. The anesthesiologist will give you specific
instructions regarding any of your medications that should be omitted or taken in a reduced
dosage. Nearly always, the surgery will be done with local anesthetic.
Prior to going into the operating room you will be given relaxant medication to put
you to sleep just long enough to inject the numbing medication around the eye. After waking
up, you will be taken to the operating room where you will remain awake but relaxed during
your surgery. If necessary, more relaxant medication can be given. During the entire time
you are in the operating room, you will be monitored closely. In the preoperative area, a
heart monitor may be placed on your chest, a pulse monitor on your finger and a blood
pressure monitor around your arm.
You will be given some eye drops, and the nurses as well as the anesthesiologist
will ask you some additional questions.
You can expect to be at the surgery center approximately four hours after surgery.
